This is a standards-based solution providing extended Ethernet connectivity (usually Internet access) over copper voice-grade cabling using asymmetrical DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) technologies.

Residential Usage

The ADSL2+ standard offers DSL line rates up to 24Mbps in the downstream (Internet-to-User) direction and up to 2Mbps in the upstream direction, this allows spectra to be used for analogue telephony (POTS – Plain Old Telephone System), ADSL2+ is primarily designed for residential usage.

Both data and telephony (POTS) can be used concurrently if so required.

ADSL2+ Reach

ADSL2+ has a reach of up to 10Km, hence the reason this technology is mostly deployed in the main Telephone Exchanges serving the Service Provider’s network footprint.

Typical applications

ADSL, ADSL2+ technologies were originally used to provide Internet connectivity between residential properties and the chosen ISP (Internet Service Provider). The solution consists of an ADSL2+ CPE (router) installed at the home connecting to an ADSL2+ DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) located in the Telephone Exchange serving thousands of residential users.

Multiple Dwelling Units

This technology is also popular in MDU (Multiple Dwelling Unit) environments such as hotels, hospitals, prisons, apartment blocks, office blocks and student accommodation blocks etc. when extending Internet services (usually installed in the basement) to each room via the existing internal telephone wiring.

Simultaneous Data and Telephony

One of the main attractions of using asymmetric technologies is the ability to use telephony and data simultaneously over the same copper wires, this is achieved by installing filters at each end of the copper wires to separate the POTS (Plain Old Telephone Signals) from the Internet data signals, these filters are also known as POTS Splitters at the DSLAM end of the link.
